Chota Rajan gets 8 yrs jail for attack on hotelier BR Shetty

  • Special MCOCA court Special Judge AT Wankhede, of Mumbai on 20th August 2020 sentenced gangster Rajendra Nikhalje alias Chhota Rajan and his five cronies to 8 years rigorous imprisonment for attempting to murder a city hotelier in 2012.
  • Earlier in the day Special Judge AT Wankhede found all 6 accused guilty on various charges of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and Indian Penal Code (IPC) including attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy.
  • Court also slapped a fine of Rs 5 lakh on each convict.
  • Rajan was deported from Indonesia in October 2015.
  • He is lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.
  • The other convicted accused are Talvinder Singh, Selvin Daniel, Nityanand Nayak, Dilip Upadhyay and Rohit Thangappan Joseph alias Satish Kalia.
  • The case dates back to October 2012 when hotelier BR Shetty was attacked in Andheri.
  • The Mumbai Police’s Anti-Extortion Cell investigated this case and contended that Chhota Rajan had ordered his sharpshooter Kalia to kill Shetty.
  • It is also said in the court that Kalia asked an aide to deploy Talvinder Singh and Dilip Upadhyay to carry out the murder.
  • Kalia was in custody for his involvement in the killing of Mumbai journalist JN Dey on June 11, 2011.
  • Nityanand Nayak and Selvin Daniel conducted recces to identify the target, BR Shetty.
  • On October 3, 2012, Talvinder Singh and Dilip Upadhyay trailed BR Shetty on a motorcycle, when he left his Andheri office in his car for his home in Malad.
  • BR Shetty reached a mall in the posh Oshiwara around 9.45 pm.
  • Dilip Upadhyay fired four bullets at him from point blank range and sped off.
  • BR Shetty took two bullets in his arm and shoulder but survived.
  • BR Shetty drove down to the Oshiwara Police Station which sent him to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Andheri.
  • After investigations, police officials said that attack was planned by Chhota Rajan and others with the motive to extort BR Shetty.
  • It is known that BR Shetty owns a chain of prominent restaurants in Mumbai and abroad.
  • After investigation, two shooters were arrested.
  • Both the shooters confessed to their crime and spilled the details of the entire conspiracy and the operation.
  • The police had filed 1,300 pages of charge sheet, which said Chhota Rajan had ordered the attack on BR Shetty to settle business scores with his opponents.
  • Chhota Rajan, an arch rival of absconding mafia don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar – has already been sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder case of journalist J Dey.
  • He is tried by CBI in some other cases, which pending against him in different parts of India.
