Dawood Ibrahim – Life and Crimes of Worlds Most Dreaded Crime Lord

Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar alias Dawood Bhai or D or Bade Bhai or now known as Bade Haji is a Gangster originally from Dongri of Mumbai. The word Bhai translates as Brother in Hindi but in the lingo of the Mumbai Underworld, the word Bhai is recognized as a member of the underworld.


Dawood heads most dreaded organised crime syndicate of India called D-Company, which is founded in Mumbai. He is on the wanted list of Interpol for criminal conspiracy, running organised crime syndicate, Mumbai serial blast of 12th March 1993.


Dawood Ibrahim is also termed as number three on The World’s 10 Most Wanted. INTERPOL also issued Red Corner Notice against him. Dawood Ibrahim is accused of heading a huge illegal empire in India and abroad. He is now hiding in port city Karachi in Pakistan under protection of Pak intelligence agency ISI. US Congressional report in 2010 also alleged that “D-company has “strategic alliance” with Pakistan’s ISI”.  Pakistani authorities denied the claim of India and USA about patronage to Dawood Ibrahim.

United States Department of Treasury also declared Dawood Ibrahim as designated terrorist and says in the dossier that he may have had ties with Osama bin Laden. His gang and its activities are under surveillance.


The United States declared Ibrahim a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” in 2003. USA also pursued the matter before the United Nations to freeze assets around the world. They also wanted to crack down on his operations and ill-gotten wealth.


USA also imposed several sanctions on Dawood Ibrahim and his cronies including D-Company.


Indian and Russian intelligence agencies are working on the leads to find out the Mafiosi boss Dawood Ibrahim with his lieutenants.  Several intelligence agencies and Interpol also pointed out Dawood’s involvement in several terror attacks in India, which includes terror attacks on Mumbai on 26th November 2008.


Dawood was born on 26 December 1955 in a Konkani Muslim family belongs to Mumka Village or Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra state. His father, Ibrahim Kaskar, was a head constable with the Mumbai Police crime branch. His mother, Amina, was a housewife.


Dawood lived in the Temkar Mohalla area of Dongri with his family. He attended Ahmed Sailor High School but dropped out soon.


Dawood grew up in a Muslim ghetto Dongri of Mumbai, which was known for underworld activates of Pathan gang. Dawood and his elder brother Sabir started their criminal activities in a very early age, when they had fights with Alamjeb and Amirzada brothers. Then they came in contact with the gang of gold smuggler Haji Mastan. This time only Dawood and his brother Sabir formed the D-Company.


It is known that Dawood Ibrahim was controlling contract killing, extortion, smuggling, land grabbing, dispute redressal or Mandavli business in Mumbai and other parts of India. He was also involved in gold, silver and electronic goods smuggling for quite some time too.


It is believed that he masterminded the 12th March 1993 serial bombings in Mumbai city.


Indian and United States governments declared Ibrahim a Global Terrorist in 2003. Deputy Prime Minister of India, Lal Krishna Advani described the step by both countries as a major development and India stands “justified.”


The Department of Treasury of USA fact sheet says that Dawood Ibrahim’s syndicate is involved in smuggling from South Asia, the Middle-East and Africa and he share it with and used by terrorist gangs al-Qaeda and Leshkare Tayyba. This fact sheet also said that D-Company is involved in large-scale narcotics smuggling to United Kingdom and Western European counties from Pakistan and Afghanistan including India.


There are reports about his contacts with al-Qaeda leader Osama bin-Laden and held meeting with this biggest terrorist twice in Afghanistan. It is also claimed that in the late 1990s, Dawood travelled to Afghanistan under the protection or terror gang Taliban to meet Osama.


It is also alleged that D-Company consistently aimed to destabilise the Indian government through Hindu Muslim riots, terrorism and civil disobedience including terror activities and funding the home grown terror gangs.


Dawood is also suspected to have connections with many terror groups in India and Pakistan. He is also linked to the financing of attacks in India by Lashkar-e-Toiba in 2002. Indian government also handed over to list of 52 most wanted criminals to the Pakistan Government, which includes Dawood Ibrahim and his family.


His gang members still lives in the Gulf countries and run many illegal business.

Nepal government also directed freezing assets of 224 individuals and 64 groups including Dawood Ibrahim, if any in Nepal.


Dawood and his gang also involved in illegal batting on cricket in India and Pakistan. Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar alleged that in 1986, Dawood had entered the Indian team dressing room in Sharjah, Mr. Vengsarkar also alleged that Dawood offered each Indian player a car, if they beat Pakistan in the Sharjah Cup final.


According to August 2015 dossier of India, which handed over to Pakistan, Dawood Ibrahim has nine residences in Pakistan. Dossier also says that Dawood has at least three Pakistani passports.


Dawood Ibrahim’s daughter, Mahrukh Ibrahim married with Junaid Miandad, the son of Pakistani cricketer Javed Miandad in 2006. His daughter Mehreen married to Ayub, a Pakistani-American in 2011. His son Moin married to Saniya, who is daughter of a London-based businessman on 25th September 2011. His brother Iqbal Kaskar was deported from Dubai and lives in Mumbai. His brother Noor Kaskar aka Noora died in Karachi some time back. Brother Humayun Kaskar also died in Karachi in 2017. His sister Haseen Parakar also died due to heart attack in 2016 in Mumbai.
