A disturbing incident unfolded at the Sassoon General Hospital in Pune as a police officer, stationed to ensure security, was wounded during an assault on a criminal affiliated with a radical organization who was receiving treatment at the medical facility. The targeted individual, Tushar Hambir, holds connections to an organized criminal gang in addition to his ties with the radical group Hindu Rashtra Sena. The attack occurred at approximately 10:30 pm within the dedicated ward reserved for prison inmates under treatment at Sassoon General Hospital.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Expresses Concern
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Sagar Patil offered insight into the incident, stating, “Hambir had been admitted to the prison inmates’ ward at Sassoon Hospital a few days ago for treatment. On Monday night, unidentified individuals attempted to assault him using bladed weapons. A police guard stationed at the ward sustained injuries on his hand while trying to thwart the attackers. We have launched a comprehensive investigation to trace the unfolding of events that led to this attack.”
Hambir Emerges Unscathed from Attack
Remarkably, Tushar Hambir managed to escape the attack without sustaining injuries.
Law enforcement agencies have promptly initiated a rigorous search to pinpoint the identity of the assailants and bring them to justice.
Hambir’s Background Tied to Serious Criminal Offenses
Tushar Hambir, aged in his late 30s, has a history intertwined with serious criminal offenses. His presence in Yerawada Central Prison comes in the wake of his booking under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
He has previously been involved in a series of grave cases, including the 2015 murder of Hemant Gaikwad, an influential member of the Shiv Sena’s youth wing, Yuva Sena.
Hambir’s prison journey also includes a prior incident in July 2019, during which he was attacked with a sharp weapon by another murder undertrial, Shahrukh Shaikh, stemming from an internal disagreement within the confines of Yerawada Prison.
As concerns over security breaches within medical facilities rise, this incident underscores the imperative for effective safeguards and investigations to maintain order and protect both inmates and those responsible for their security.
