Mujara parties a hit after Dance Bar closure

Vishad M, Mumbai

The closure of dance bars in Maharashtra came as a rude shock not only to those who earned from them, but also to those who frequented them for pleasure. The dance bars association and the State government are contesting the case in the Supreme Court, but dance bar lovers in Mumbai have already found an alternative. Mujaras are now the current fad of the town. This hot and new trend is not only safe but gives more pleasure to its organizers as well as the guests.

Mujaras are generally organized in Madh Island bungalows and cottages in Mumbai at a large scale. Last Sunday, approximately 80% of bungalows and cottages were booked by the so-called dance lovers. On the condition of anonymity, a bungalow owner confirmed, ‘After the raids of police on beer bars, we are getting lots of calls for bookings. These people book the bungalow under any name for family picnic or for one night party. Before the raids I was charging only 2,000 rupees per night, now I am taking 3,500 to 5,000 and people are willingly paying me this amount.’ He also adds that he has no guilt for doing this as he is only giving his bungalow for entertainment and family purpose.

Mujara dancers come from different parts of the city, like Kamathipura, Pila House, VP Road, DB Marg, etc., areas commonly known to house numerous brothels. Apart from this, bar dancers are also frequenting such parties. In these kinds of Mujaras, there is an audience of approximately 10 to 25. They place their order well in advance of their brand of liquor and food, which is provided by hotels in the vicinity. A Mujara party costs between 15 to 25 thousand, depending upon the number of girls, food and liquor quality.

Informs a source, ‘Some of the beer bar owners also arrange Mujara parties for their regular customers. They charge them an entry fee of Rs.100 to Rs.150 per person and provide them with food and liquor along with the dance. In some parties, the girls are also available for further entertainment, and many rooms are reserved for this type of business only.’

When asked that why there is no law to stop Mujara parties in the city, a senior police officer, who took strict action against pickup joints and illegal beer bars explains, ‘This is only termed illegal when there is indecent behaviour involved. If they are consuming liquor in a group, then it is a violation of Mumbai Police Act and Excise laws. Then the police can raid and arrest people involved.’ He denied about any information of Mujara and Rave parties going on in his area. He assured that he will take necessary action if he received any information on the subject.

Another police officer says that private Mujara parties are on an increase, as people can bypass the law and protect themselves. ‘We can not take action against any person, if he or she is involved in illicit relationship with mutual concern. PITA will be applicable only when money will change hands from customers to pimps or to girls or if it is a forceful act,’ he says. He also pointed out that if a person is consuming liquor without permit, the authorities can penalize him or her with penalty only.

A social activist, who does not want to disclose his name, says, ‘There are approximately 100 bungalows and cottages available in Madh Island for this purpose. Mostly these bungalows and cottages were made on the coastal area in 1 to 15 acres of land and built up flouting rules and regulations. If government agencies investigate properly, they will find many things which are suspicious. Bungalow and cottage owners are giving their premises on the daily rent, but do not pay applicable taxes. They are providing their properties on rent to Film, TV and Entertainment industry for shooting purpose also but not showing it as income in their IT returns. Who will take action against them?’

The social worker also informs that rooms in these properties are also available to lovers seeking privacy for around Rs.500 for a period of 2 to 4 hours, and for Rs.2,000 to Rs.3,000 for an entire day. An entire bungalow, if hired for shooting purposes, could cost anywhere between Rs.20,000 to Rs.30,000, depending on its area. For continuous shooting, rates are as lowered by 30 to 50 percent.
