High Security at Sensitive Places across Mumbai

Special Correspondent, Mumbai

The seizure of large quantities of arms and explosives in Maharashtra has once again highlighted the terrorist threat to sensitive and strategic places in Mumbai. That the quantity of RDX seized was even more than used during the 1993 serial blasts has been giving the security agencies sleepless nights. It looks likely that their vigil has resulted in thwarting a major catastrophe, but has also established that the terror threat was much nearer and much more extensive than could have been thought of.

As a consequence, the Police has tightened security in many sensitive areas in Mumbai. Mumbai Police is working on two categories of sensitive zones - one that are communally sensitive, and the other that are of strategic importance. Police personnel have not only been deployed at different locations with arms and ammunition, but also have been posted in plain clothes at such places.

The most sensitive places are listed by the Mumbai Police and Intelligence agencies are, Mantralaya, Vidhansabha Bhavan, Sachivalaya building, World Trade Center at Cuffe Parade, Western Naval Command Head Quarters at Navy Nagar in Colaba, INS Ashvini, INS Angre, INS Hamala (in Malad), RCF Chembur, BARC Trombay, all ports including JNPT, BPT and Naval Port, ONGC off-shore establishments and all petroleum depots including BPCL, HPCL, IOCL buildings, Nehru Centre at Worli, VSNL & MTNL HQs, Mumbai & Maharashtra State Police HQs, Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport (Sahar), domestic airport at Santacruz, and Shiv Sena Bhavan at Dadar (W).

Security at all railway stations has also been tightened. Sanitation and surveillance is in high mode at all railway stations but particularly at Churchgate, Dadar, CST, Bandra and Kurla Terminus are under strict check. Even the bus stands of MSRTC and BEST are under scrutiny and heavy bandobast.

Senior Police officers are very careful about religious places which are very sensitive in terms of terrorist attacks. Vigil has been increased at Siddhivinayak Temple at Dadar, Mahalakshmi and Babulnath Temple in South Mumbai, Haji Ali at Worli, Swami Narayan Mandir at Dadar (E), ISKON at Juhu, Juma Masjid at Kalbadevi are some of the places where security measures have been steeped up. Small sensitive pockets of the city like Mohammed Ali Road, Dongri, Bhendi Bazar, Kurar Village and Pathanwadi in Malad, Kala Nagar in Bandra (E), Mumbra - Kausa, Jogeshwari (E), Malwani at Kandivali. Heavily armed policemen have been deployed in these areas and Rapid Action Force teams have been kept on alert for any emergency.
